Fading Echoes by Erin Hunter

4.0

Fading Echoes makes me wish I'd read this arc in order with the others. I first met Dovepaw and Ivypaw as warriors in later books, and I couldn't bring myself to like them very much, particularly Dovepaw. Seeing them younger in this book, I really enjoy the dynamic of them starting their apprenticeship with the idea that they'll remain super close friends, and then watching them mature and grow apart due to a number of reasons. Dovepaw is a great character now, and I'm interested to see what exactly makes her change so much between here and Tigerheart's Shadow, which is where I first read a lot about her.

In this book, The Three struggle with the knowledge that the Dark Forest is rising up against StarClan and against the living Clan cats. This ends the book with a very interesting battle scene, in which
SpoilerFirestar loses a life and Russetfur is killed
.

Also in this book, a tree falls into the ThunderClan camp,
Spoilerkilling Longtail and paralyzing Briarpaw/Briarlight
, which was tragic and very emotional. It was a surprise event and I think it was done well.
