Having read all of the original novels a few years back, and Devil May Care shortly after (which I did enjoy), it was a pleasure to be back in the 1950s with Bond.
From my perspective, the character and writing style was a great continuation of the original novels. The story was really well paced and quick to get through. Really enjoyed the villain and his back story, although wish he was given a little more time to develop.
The Bond girls were really strong characters for the most part - almost a shame to have the cliche ending with one of them, did feel tacked on for the sake of it, but I guess this is James Bond.
Really enjoyed the last third of the book, from Bonds' escape from a terrible death, through to the pulse pounding bike chase, train sequence and even the events of rainy London in the closing pages. It would work very well as a film.
I've not read any other books by the author and feel I'm in the minority, so will be taking a look at his work in the future.
