She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement by Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey

challenging emotional hopeful informative tense fast-paced

4.5

As an aspiring investigative journalist, this book was the perfect read.

'She Said' tells the story of Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey as they unpacked the crimes of sexual assault committed by Harvey Weinstein and covered up in silence settlements worth millions of dollars. The account is fast-paced and handles the stories of each victim carefully as the crimes of Weinstein are unravelled through every voice. I like that the book considered the effect of the investigation on a greater scale, such as in terms of contributing to the Me Too movement and how it encouraged women to feel safer about speaking out. The account was impactful, touching and incredibly well recounted - I found myself speeding through the middle part of the book as Weinstein begins to challenge the investigation, and although the book is about very real people, they were written in a way which allowed you to read them as fictional characters. Every person was recognisable - they are not just names on the page. As a reader primarily of fiction, I did not struggle through this non-fiction account at all, which surprised me.
