This book had too many similarities to better works for me to enjoy it. Instead of a contemporary setting, I believe the story would have worked better if it was set in the past, or at least during a pre-cellphone era. I appreciate the attempt to telegraph a story of trauma through an unreliable narrator, and maybe readers who haven't encountered texts like We Have Always Lived in the Castle, We Were Liars, etc. will think this is a fresher story than it is. I also understand that while the relationship between Cara and Sam wasn't technically incest, it's still too close to really applaud/ship and was completely unnecessary.
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Alcohol, Injury/Injury detail, Incest, and Death
