Much like the first book in the series, I enjoyed the increase in character building (fleshing out the main characters even more), the atmospheric historical setting, the clever and talented interweaving of historical details into the background of the book and the main plot, and the main mystery. My major qualm is the mystery seemed next to impossible to solve given the details provided the reader in the first 80% of the book. I also think there were a few plot contrivances that went too far, which even go beyond willful suspension of disbelief. This causes the book to lose verisimilitude near the end. But overall, this was still a very enjoyable read. 4 stars.
