The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters

3.0

More and more I find myself reading a book and wondering what I will remember. I believe that I WILL remember this story, because, how awful. But I don't believe I remember the main characters, or much of what happens other than the core.

I think I'd rate this higher if I had not chosen the audiobook, since I had some heavy driving this week. The story itself is so important, and it was really sad. Unfortunately, the narration was so flat. I wondered immediately upon listening if they were chosen for this particular book because they are indigenous people. I think it is wise that they are, and due to the gravity of the subject matter as well as the story, it was likely challenging to bring life to the text. Still both narrators sounded gravely disinterested to the point of being distracting, which is a shame.

I appreciate the boom in books that bring voice to stories that need to be heard by indigenous people, minorities, and women. I just wish I had picked up the book instead.
