The Long and Faraway Gone by Lou Berney

5.0

I was pleasantly surprised by The Long and Faraway Gone. I had to choose an award winning mystery for a class, this one came up on quite a few lists and was available at my library.

Two tragedies take place in OKC in the summer of 1986, a movie theater massacre and a missing girl, both unresolved. The Long and Faraway Gone follows two people affected by these tragedies, a survivor and the younger sister of the missing girl. There is an overarching mystery the book follows but the interesting part is the story of how these two people have dealt and are dealing with their tragedies for the last 26 years. Wyatt trying to come to terms with why he survived and no else did and Julianna searching for why her sister would just disappear. The two stories briefly and superficially collide but both are equally compelling, the only real thread connecting them is proximity.
