This book is undeniably well written. It’s important and a stark reminder of the horrors that still happen in the world because of intolerance, hate, and a misguided sense of pride/honor. But it was hard to read. At least one part made my cry and I had to put it away for several days about 75% of the way through it because I needed a break from it, both of which are out of the norm for me. The ending was hopeful, but it fell a little flat to me. Was that hope earned? Maybe. I’m not sure why this novel affected me so strongly but it did.
Graphic: Death, Bullying, Violence, Religious bigotry, and Islamophobia
