Troubling Love by Elena Ferrante

challenging dark mysterious medium-paced

3.5

A mother’s death forces her daughter to reflect on shared secrets and lies. Elena Ferrante’s first novel establishes her as the voice of atmospheric mid-century Naples. This is more abstract, with less of a grip on gritty reality, as her later novels. Delia is also somehow a less graspable character than those in the Neapolitan trilogy for example. Nevertheless, still a luminous and challenging debut.
