Notes from a Young Black Chef by Kwame Onwuachi

adventurous challenging dark emotional hopeful informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

I'm skeptical of memoirs written by people in their 20s/30s, but this one really works! Kwame Onwuachi's story is sweeping and captures life's extremes over a short period of time, from living in Nigeria to drug-dealing to working at Michelin-star restaurants. After having to close his first restaurant, he reflects on his life so far, what that says about him and how we wants to move forward. He reflects on his experience as a Black man in America and makes social commentary about racism especially in fine-dining. He beautifully weaves food and signature dishes from his culture and upbringing into all the phases of his life. Great writing, emotional and provocative.
