Honestly I was hoping and expecting a mystery with a plot that made sense. This was a mystery but the plot was hard to believe and confusing. Unfortunately, the more romance that was added to this book the less and less I was interested. And the main character CONSTANTLY made poor choices. If it weren’t for the narrator I wouldn’t have finished it. THIS BOOK WAS SO FRUSTRATING! 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Moderate: Domestic abuse and Physical abuse
Minor: Child death
So there’s a ghost named Maeve who is currently haunting this house at a boarding school with this girl Delphine who can’t leave because she fell in the narrow and now any unfiltered water could kill her, and specifically haunting the main character Eden when Eden moves into the house to be a companion for Delphine. So boom, Eden was basically abused and tortured by her psychopath older brother (they never officially give him a diagnosis but it sounds like it because he’s reckless and violent and would take out his anger on his sister growing up in order to hurt their rich ass parents, so Eden had to lock her door at night. SO! This boarding school was an escape of course but then her parents have to pay her her brothers court fees, and Eden has to keep it a secret that she got fucked up by her brother and her brothers dealer friend who he wasn’t supposed to be around was pumping her up full of drugs all the time. And since her parents found at towards the end of summer once they were back from wherever, they told her not to say anything but ALSO can’t cover her tuition which is why Eden agrees to be Delphine’s companion because Delphine’s mom will cover it.
Okay so boom, Eden starts to actually like Delphine and is getting haunted by Maeve, who is looking for her old lover but is also accidentally re-injuring Eden from the wounds that she got from her brother over the summer. So Eden starts talking to Maeve (not knowing Maeve’s full intentions at the time) and finds out she was a closeted gay way back when, when people didn’t like same sex couples -LAME. Anyways, instead of thinking Maeve fell in and was looking for her love named Grace who also fell in, turns out Maeve was an abusive love-obsessed person that Grace was scared of and trying to leave/get out of their toxic relationship. Grace reached out to a teacher who turns out was low key gay, and he’s now the principal of this boarding school. So the author kept mentioning him as a suspect but it became too obvious that he wasn’t. Because what ended up happening was that Grace pushed the both of them in because she felt like she couldn’t escape Maeve’s abuse. Confusing if Grace falling in was accidental or not hit they both fell in. And then somehow Grace saved Delphine when she fell in, but became PART of Delphine??? And of fucking course Eden falls in love and tries to be captain save a ho for Delphine. It’s not until close to the end of the book that she realizes Maeve is actually the bad guy *even though her friends ARE TELLING HER TO LEAVE MAEVE ALONE!* but does she listen?? Nope! So of course her body ends up being taken over by Maeve who will stop at nothing to find grace and knows she’s inside of Delphine. So Eden’s friends are like “oh fuck what are we gonna do?!” and then Grace somehow pushes them all into the narrow, again somehow freeing Delphine and Eden while Maeve and Grace stayed back in the narrow as ghosts? The story just honestly became so ridiculous and adding romance was an ICK big time. Because once Delphine was just herself after years of being a combination of herself and Grace, she essentially has to get to know who she is, and she doesn’t want Eden anymore because Eden basically fell in love with Grace! Like no duh!!! And then of course on the last page Eden finally has gained a bit of confidence in herself. Such TRASH ARRGGGGGHHHH SO ANNOYING!
