I enjoyed this book overall! I thought the storyline was cool and I liked Violet as a character. I found it easy to follow. I did think some parts were a bit slow and found the writing a little cheesy at times. I didn’t think it was anything groundbreaking but I still enjoyed reading it. I liked the ending, it was something I had not considered and leaves me excited for book two!
Spoiler I like the idea of Violet and Xaden and like them both as characters but I did think their romance felt a bit rushed and awkward. It was barely enemies to lovers… Violet knew she should hate him but never really seemed to. Xaden seemed to fall for her very quickly as well. Update: Upon thinking more about this I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe they weren’t ever really enemies. Since we know Brennan was alive we can assume he told Xaden about his sister Violet who was training to be a scribe. Perhaps the first time he saw her (we interpret this as hatred) it is really a look of surprise and the hatred could be directed to her mother for forcing her to come to rider quadrant. If I’m choosing to believe this, it changes the dynamic between Xaden and Violet and their relationship fits better in my mind. This was one of my biggest issues, so I bumped my rating up .25 stars.
