I listened to the audiobook and recommend that people read it instead. The narrator detracted. Most of the book felt like a middle grade book instead of YA although there were a number of deaths.

For most of the book, I was planning on giving it a 3.5, because it just felt young and predictable, but the ending was charming and won me over.

I also liked the magic and the stories of Elatsoe’s ancestors that were woven through it.
