For adult eyes/ears at some points but done in a way which highlights the strength of the character's relationships. A wide mix of characters but you get attached to all of them and hope for things to turn out for the best. There were parts I wish it went into a little more background about some of the magic and magic users (I don't think that is too spoilery since you likely read the first one and know there's magic in the book).
