This book was lovely. It takes the story of Adam and Eve and makes it more of a story than a few lines of Bible. Gioconda Belli manages to get into the head of Eve very believably and present her as the first human woman - the first human to ever give birth, to ever explore sexuality, to ever eat meat, to ever experience the death of a son and loss of another. With no one but the serpent to guide her along her path from innocent to ancestor of everyone, she stumbles through life, appalled at Adam for hunting, wondering what is filling her belly, wondering what death is like, wondering why it has gotten cold and dark when she experiences her first winter. All these things we take for granted that we can ask our parents about when we are children, Eve has to learn for herself. It's really quite a remarkable achievement to put yourself in the position of someone who is fully human but doesn't know anything about the world or the way it works. And it was a lot of fun to read.
