3.5 stars. this is really hard to rate because it was long and complex and hard to read at times. the subject matter is dark and the exploration of motherhood was absolutely incredible. i also thought it was a smidge too long, making it seem super intimidating and some of the writing was a bit pretentious as well. the last chapter of the book was amazing, definitely something i will think about in the upcoming months. school shootings are just such a heartbreaking and terrifying subject to write about and i think lionel shriver did a really good job at deconstructing the glamorisation of guns in america. the narrator was also so so complex and flawed yet relatable, i think reading from her perspective is what made this book so good, i also did not see the twist in plot until the very end and for that i feel a deep sadness in the pit of my stomach. overall a really good read but it took me almost three weeks bc of how hard it was, would recommend.
