A Special Place for Women by Laura Hankin

4.0

You don't have to prove that you're worthy. You only have to want to try. The fire we build will be a large one, with plenty of room around it. We'll gather in our circle and join hands, and we'll dance with our imperfect bodies.

A Special Place for Women has a lot to say - about fourth-wave feminism, about sisterhood, about elitism and inclusion. I see people arguing that the book doesn't say enough about any of these things, but it hit this sweet spot for me by broaching topical subjects without being weighed down by their seriousness.

More and more as of late, my feelings about a book are dictated largely by how much fun I had with the read. A Special Place for Women was a great reading experience for me. Jillian, an unemployed journalist grieving the loss of her mother, sets her investigative sights on Nevertheless, an elite club of women that is shrouded in secrecy. The ensuing ride is entertaining, and the ending is one that satisfied me.

Also, Jillian + Raf = the human embodiment of the heart eye emoji. Seriously, I absolutely adore them. Maybe I just need to read more romances because, admittedly, I swooned.
