Upon second reading: Masterpiece. So formative to my 20-something-hood that it’s almost inextricable the before and after having read this book. I noticed so much more the power dynamics and also the (Irish) religious imagery, and it almost made it like reading it for literary criticism, which was fun. Incredible. Also, noticed the bit about Marianne saying, what’s so bad about needing people? At the end which I had never picked up on before. Or maybe I’m just in that headspace now
