This is one of the first cosy fantasy books I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it!

This cosy fantasy debut focuses on Aila, a keeper at a magical zoo who has a life goal of breeding phoenixes to save them from extinction.

I loved the bisexual and anxiety representation throughout the book, and I really connected with Aila as a main character. I also really liked the rivals to lovers sub-plot, although I wouldn’t say this was a romance book (it was hardly even a fantasy book, really). It read more like a coming of age book with romance and fantasy elements.

I did find the plot predictable (I guessed the ending), but… I liked that. Sometimes, you just need a book that delivers what you expect.

Some of the language choices were childish and repetitive (‘dork’ and ‘skies and seas’ were used wayyy too much), but if you can look past this, you’ll get a safe and heartwarming story about a woman in her 20s loving her magical birds. What’s not to love?!
