Oedipus the King by Sophocles

4.0

after reading antigone i knew i wanted to read the rest of sophocles' work. 'antigone' had such an impact on my perception of greek tragedy and influenced my choice of module for next year.

so i was thrilled to read that oedipus the king was equally as good. i missed antigone and ismene, but we had jocasta who held the same role - she was equally as intelligent.

oedipus as a character began so mighty, so strong, so powerful, and almost immediately began to descend from this high status. as he slowly understands the impact of his actions, the mistakes that he has made.

the fact that jocasta realises first is powerful - she cannot continue in her life anymore.

and oedipus' final farewell to his children was powerful. seeing creon taking over after being discarded as a liar beforehand was an interesting precursor to his status in 'antigone'.

i am excited to read more in the upcoming months !
