A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos

Enjoyed this, for the most part
Harry Potter meets Caraval, but even more cut throat. It was hella fun.
Obviously, as the first installment of a 4-book series, it was heavy on the lore and the world building. I'm not the biggest fantasy reader but I thought Dabos did a really great job at creating a nuanced and detailed universe and did what she had to do: introduce us to the world and its rules and show us everything we need to know without it ending up sterile like a history book (like some other fantasy novels). I gotta say, I believe she is an extremely talented author, and I had fun with the story and the characters. Especially Ophelia, whom i initially considered your cookie cutter heroine, proved me wrong: she's tough as nails.
What lowers my rating is the pacing. Interesting as it is, we're talking about a pretty slow-moving plot here, and it gets tiring after a while. I found myself wanting to skip sentences a bit too often. But it's a promising start for sure and I'll continue with the series.
