I can’t remember why this made it onto my TBR, other than curiosity about why it led to obscenity trials in the US. Of course in today’s world, the sexual content does not seem that wild, and I have a hunch the content concerning Russia was the real reason for its banning. Or at least that just fanned the flames in a Cold War America. The book is a largely autobiographical novel, and I hesitate to even call it a novel. It feels more like a journal, where Miller recorded anything and everything, without filter. My English major brain can appreciate the post-modernist existentialism, but my feminist brain is pretty disgusted by the blatant, constant misogyny. I can’t say it is a book I recommend.
Graphic: Misogyny, Racial slurs, Sexism, Sexual content, Excrement, and Antisemitism
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Misogyny, Trafficking, Abortion, Pregnancy, and Alcohol
