The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick

4.0

Weirder than I expected.

This is the Dick book that most people have heard of, so my automatic assumption is that it must be the boring one, and I'd seen a few episodes of the Amazon series too and just assumed the book was going to be similarly straight forward and whatever. This is decades before VALIS and any of the krazy stuff so it's going to be a bit tame right? And an alternative universe where Hitler won the war? It's all been done hasn't it?

Those were my thoughts. This was the boring Dick book I had to read so I could get it out of the way. But actually, it's quite good, and the early style of his writing is very well meshed together, slightly more descriptive, a bit more "trying", but ultimately still pretty weird narratively.

Dick doesn't disappoint.

Well, some dicks do. Most dicks disappoint. But not Dick.
