After Elin's mother is sentenced to death by the head Toda Steward, the caretakers of wondrous beasts, Elin becomes the
adopted daughter of a beekeeper
. She then
gets a into a school for a Royal Beast caretakers, where she meets and forms a tentative friendship with Leelan, a Royal Beast</spoilers>. The devotion Elin has to Leelan, coupled with her refusal to enforce rules that she deems unethical, makes the connection between the characters more endearing. Though some aspects of the world may be confusing, more so in the beginning, the other parts of the book make up for it. The book proved to be a good read.
