Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention—and How to Think Deeply Again by Johann Hari

challenging informative reflective fast-paced

4.0

Overall, I thought this was a valuable read. I liked how the author incorporated his own experiences when discussing the limits of “digital detox” and highlighting that phone addiction and social media is a systemic issue and not an individual failure. I do feel like some of the proposed solutions are too idealistic (“ban surveillance capitalism”? Good luck with that) and I agree with some other reviews  that the treatment of ADHD could have been better-I agree that environment plays a role, but as someone who has benefited from psych meds, I can’t say fixing the environment is a magic bullet (assuming it’s possible in the first place). Still, I found this an important read and I plan to keep it in mind as I work on realigning my focus and reclaiming my time.
