Sinner by Lana Pecherczyk

5.0

Every book series about the battle between good and evil needs a good origin story. This one isn't just good. It's great! Lana Pecherczyk has given us a concept that is so relevant it's almost frightening. The world is being overrun by evil. A scientist has managed to isolate the genome that causes greed. After that, finding the genome responsible for all of the seven deadly sins was easy. Investors began showing up - the Vatican, private citizens, a group called The Syndicate - and it seemed the goal was good. They planned to use a surrogate - in this case, the same scientist who had discovered the genomes for evil - to give birth to children who would be genetically altered to be able to detect one of the seven deadly sins. The idea was that they could sense the presence of their particular sin and stop a crime before it happened. With the right kind of influence, these children could restore a world that is over-run with crime and pain. Under the wrong kind of influence . . . let's just say the outcome would be grim.

Enter Sister Mary and Flint Fydler. Both of them work for Biolum Industries but only Mary is aware of exactly what is going on. Is Mary who she claims to be? Is Flint up to the task of helping these children before evil men can use them for awful purposes?

This is merely the origins novella and all of the children are fairly young. One is even born during the course of the book! The rest of the series is focused on each of the children individually as they grow into their powers and try to find their perfect mate - a person who embodies the exact opposite of the sin that they have been engineered to fight.

Pecherczyk did a beautiful job using this novella to establish the origin of the seven as well as setting up their future stories. I loved the multi-dimensional characters and am VERY intrigued by the premise - a genetic connection to the seven deadly sins? It's an intriguing premise. I have already gotten my hands on "Envy" and can't wait to read it!!
