Confess by Colleen Hoover

2.0

I originally rated this 3 stars but after deconstructing my thoughts on this book, I had to bump it down to 2 stars.
I think that this book had such an intriguing premise which I thought was extremely creative. In the author's note, Hoover mentioned how real confessions (submitted by readers) were going to be incorporated into the story. I was excited because I KNEW there was going to be a lot of drama. Another element I enjoyed in the book was the paintings that were printed. I've never seen that in a book before and I loved it.

I was hooked by the first chapter and rooted for Auburn and her boyfriend Adam. It was very reminiscent of Atlas and Lily's relationship in Hoover's novel "it ends with us"

As the story progressed we were introduced to Owen. I really tried to like this man, at some point I gaslit myself to like him. He gave me serial killer vibes. He named a cat after himself?!?

The serial killer love interest wasn't my main issue with this book; it was the underdeveloped characters and their motives. I wish we could've seen more of Adam and Trey's relationship to fully understand trey's motives in this book. I didn't understand why he was so adamant about dating his dead sibling's girlfriend other than him being a misogynist.

Everything fell flat in this book and I couldn't even fall back on a swoon-worthy romance to overlook the flaws. I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters enough to root for them, I was reading through the main conflict and was like "girl, you're going through all of this because of THIS man?"

This wasn't a bad book by any means, Hoover's addictive writing style made it a breeze to get through. I was just let down because I LOVED the first chapter and had different expectations of how the story would unfold.
