Halloween: The Official Movie Novelization by John Passarella

2.0

There was no movie I was more psyched for last year than the return of Halloween. I was disappointed to say the least. So I tried finishing the novelization before revisiting it, but it's just so bad, even by novelization standards. The Halloween franchise has a history of having the likes of Dennis Etchison doing the novelizations for 2 and Season of the Witch, and oftentimes, when written by a talented author, they can be a way of gaining insight into the story and side characters, building the world and so on. And if nothing else, I was hoping it might contain some pieces from the previous 40 drafts of the screenplay. But the only further insight given are on tedious descriptions of physical places and things. It often reads like fanfiction (funny, given how the film turned out), but I mean, like, down to the pages-long descriptions of what everyone is wearing. There's absolutely no perspective or character to its voice, and often we jump from POV to POV between sentences. It's really pretty terrible. I'm glad we got another Halloween, but man it leaves a lot to be desired.
