Undoctored: The Story of a Medic Who Ran Out of Patients by Adam Kay
dark
emotional
funny
medium-paced
4.0
The book title is quite misleading, as it tries to make out that it’s a follow-on from This Is Going To Hurt. It is a follow-on in many ways, as it’s about Kay’s life after giving up a career in medicine, but there’s substantially less Doctor-related stories.
I still found it funny and enjoyable, although some stories were not…necessary (I don’t think I’ll view pizza and chopsticks in the same way ever again). The end really showed Kay laying himself bare, which was admirable and moving.
I know that Kay has a dark, self-depreciating humour, and I appreciate what he’s done to improve the mental health of medical professionals. However, his lack of acknowledgment of his own privilege grated on me a lot. He frequently made out that he was struggling for money - but he bought a property in London and had a cleaner. It’s all relative, really.
