Mariam Sharma Hits the Road by Sheba Karim

3.0

I didn't like this as much as I wanted to. The story felt incomplete, and not in an intentional way. I wish it had focused more on developing characters than describing places. Umar was by far my favorite character, and the rest of the cast seemed pretty one-dimensional. Even Mariam, whose character growth should have been the defining arc of the narrative, didn't always feel like a real person, but rather a mouthpiece for some Very Important Issues. It's always a good idea to be critical of the things we love, including culture and religion, but I wish there had been more redeeming features to balance out everything the main trio of characters found negative in their world.
