Mestiza Blood by V. Castro

4.0

So, if you enjoy horror, this is a super fun and provocative collection of nightmares, legends, dreams, and dark desires centered around the Chicana experience.

Castro has a really distinctive voice in the genre that makes her horror stories refreshing to read. We get to see horror through the eyes of new kinds of characters. We’ve also got a slew of reimagined monsters pulled right out of many different Hispanic storytelling traditions and folklore.

Personally, I love the intersectional feminist lens that many stories in this collection have. This is horror about women, for women, by women. It’s vicious and brutal and awful men and societies get what’s coming to them. But, also, we have these unique introspections on horror itself just by virtue of these stories not being told by stereotypical characters.

Definitely recommend if you’re in a horror rut and need something new and different and impactful to wake you up~
