Loveless, by Alice Oseman

4.5

I actually was kind of scared that I was too old to read this book now, hence me not picking it up for months and it collecting dust on my bookshelves. But I did, finally. And I loved it.
The strong focus on friendship and platonic love in this novel was just heartwarming. I really enjoyed the message that it depicted: friendship is as important, if not more important, in live as love is. And for someone like me, who has difficulty making new friends, this hit very close to heart. The whole friend group in this novel has up-and-downs, personal ones but also as friends per se. But seeing them putting their friendship first was so great, it almost made me jealous haha.
Of course, this novel is about much more than friendship: finding yourself, coming to terms with what you found, and navigating a new life with this discovery. And all that in a new chapter in their lives - university.
I felt a lot for Georgia. The depiction of her finding and accepting her sexuality was so real, and I guess anyone who has gone through something similar can connect with something in Georgia’s journey. As a reader, especially in the first two to three parts of this novel, just wanted to hug her and tell her, not to force anything and that it is okay to be "different". She made mistakes, but in the end resolved them in a beautiful way.
As for her friends, I really loved her friendship journey with Rooney and Sunil is just the best. Pip and Jason are her best friends, and though there were some difficulties, they never forgot what was the most important thing to then: their friendship.
This novel has a very strong message and I believe Alice Oseman did a fantastic job in writing it. Of course, there are always some things one could nitpick, but I can very easily overlook them, if a novel is as heartfelt as this one. Cannot recommend this enough.
