Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik

adventurous mysterious reflective slow-paced

4.5

Very strong sequel to a very strong start of a series, in my opinion. The temptation to skip over large chunks of the ocean voyage must have been strong, but the book is much better for the time it takes in that uncomfortable liminal space. One thing that I think works very well is how the cultural distance from the Chinese characters is communicated; it's clear that the English characters just don't understand them most of the time, rather than them being Just Strange.
