This is a strange little book. I'm not quite sure what I expected and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. The poetic prose was unexpected, at times adding depth and heart to the story and at other times stunting the dialog and taking me out of the story. I liked the premise of a dark carnival, the moral that love and joy defeat evil and corruption, the coming of the age story within a horror story (Stranger Things vibes there), and the quaint early-1960s Midwestern town setting, but the pacing was off and the prose was out of place at times. Still, this was a cozy, easy October read- spooky but not real scary. 3.5 or 4 stars depending on my mood. Beware the autumn people....
