The Prince of Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

5.0

This was an absolutely incredible novel by one of my favourite authors. I had not realized that he got his start with young adult novels but clearly he excelled at it. Even though the characters are all young adults, it didn’t even occur to me during the reading that the book was aimed at younger people, which I think is the highest praise a YA novel can earn.

I have taken to reading novels, particularly those by non-Anglophone authors, via audiobook. A well narrated book, particularly with the addition of appropriate music, is so incredibly atmospheric and makes the experience so much more nuanced and layered. This was certainly one book that I would recommend everyone listen to on audio if they have the opportunity. The audio version not only included an interview with the author at the end, but also several passages of music composed and played by him.

I loved all of the characters in the story, with the obvious exception of the villain, and would love to see a sequel. At this point I’m not certain if there has been a return to any of these characters – there are a few more books supposedly in the series, but I don’t know if any of the characters reappear. I’m about to read the second book so I guess I’ll find out!
