The Sun Also Rises: Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition by Ernest Hemingway

1.0

In short : a bunch of immoral people doing immoral things with little consequence.

The characters were wholly irritating. Brett being manipulative, fickle and self-centred ; Robert being a wimp with a chip on his shoulder ; Mike just being outright rude… there was little to like. And although I’m sure this is partly the point - to depict these characters in such an unlikeable way - it made for not a very enjoyable read.

Although there are considerable plot points, I felt as though they were overcast by VERY detailed accounts of physical actions, on a few nights - eg, descriptions of entering bars, or drinking, or drinking some more. For example, there was one description about entering the bar and not finding the group and therefore going to look for them in another bar - is this a necessary detail? I appreciate it is a specific writing style but I found it took away from the main plot.

In reality, this may be a classic and have lots of literary value but it was not for me !
