Black Howl by Christina Henry

5.0

Well, I seem to be addicted to this series. In this book, there seems to be ghosts popping up left, right and centre after untimely deaths (unscheduled deaths). Only, they keep repeating actions. Wade, the alpha wolf in the pack Maddy is allies with goes missing with other twenty werewolf cubs. Jude comes for her assistance in finding the cubs and Wade, only for the same thing to happen to the cubs. They're alive, but repeating the same words and actions over and over. Maddy wants to find out how and why this is happening.

A lot happens in this book, Samiel's trial takes place (Gabriel's half-brother), we now know that J.B. (Maddy's boss as an Agent of Death) is the son of Queen Amarantha (Queen of the Faerie Court) and is therefore half Faerie, Gabriel is freed by Lucifer and Lucifer personally marries his granddaughter Maddy and Gabriel, and Maddy gaining the position of 'Hound of the Hunt'. There's still a lot of tension between Maddy and her ex-fiancé (a stranger who was forced upon her by her father). In this book she renounces any ties to her father, the relationship being in name only. Maddy's happiness is only to be brief as events unfold.

It's been quite a while since I've read a book were I've felt such immense sympathy for a character. Maddy never gets a break and is truly heart-broken at the end of this book. I almost cried myself! Which never happens. The author is very skilled with emotive language and using it to her advantage to portray to the reader how the events affect the character(s) in question, such as J.B.'s stress in this book, Maddy's personal life, etc. However, she also creates very believable characters. By the end of this book I wanted my own Beezle. He's so grumpy and complains all the time, but he also cares for Maddy a great deal and would do anything for her, and it really shows in this book - he'd also do anything for a doughnut.

Over the past three books Maddy has made more allies that I think she's aware of, and leaves nothing but destruction in her wake (unintentionally of course). But she's made it clear that she's her own woman and won't listen to anybody because her sense of morals won't let her.

This book is so emotional I can't wait until the fourth book comes out on Kindle. I think I'm having withdrawals. This series keeps getting better and better, so although this is the first book in the series to receive five stars, so far I'd give this series five stars for plot and how life-like the characters are. Perfect!
