It's clearly a reaction to high fantasy by having the protagonist be essentially a noir detective who wanders into a Camelot story. Terse, ambivalent, lacking any self-awareness, he blunders through by bluffing and punching everyone around him while women throw themselves at him. It's still a brisk read that subverts some tropes even today, but thrilling or moving it's not.
