A solid prequel novella, most useful if you are already invested in the Lays of the Hearthfire series. It focuses on the Emperor before the events of the main book, especially when Cliopher first becomes his secretary, and up to the Littleridge Treaty. I was hoping for more of his perspective from the first novel, but I can see the strategy for ending before, and it did help set up some context; I hadn't realized that magic was still so confused even then.
