The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock

5.0

the era from early post WW2 (1945-ish) up to 1960s, as what i have observed the timeline of events of this book, had the prevalence of toxic masculinity. horror aside, i think the central theme of this book was the wide—albeit not too complex—character study on how men treat women, how men handle their emotions and justify their immoral actions, and how, on the other end of the spectrum, women let themselves be treated by men. i kinda expected that since that era was not progressive yet with that controversial concept.

for me, that is the true meaning of the title of this book. it's not really about the religion or the disturbing ritual shits. it's the action and motivation that became the devil that swiped the morality of these characters from generation to generation.

i loved this one. :)
