I find second books in a duet are often a letdown compared to the first book and, unfortunately, this book was not an exception

A 4-year time jump was a risky move and didn’t pay off here. I found it really hindered what would have otherwise would have been a fantastic grovel romance. Instead of being able to enjoy the grovel, I found myself annoyed that it had drawn out so long for such silly reasons. The fact that all the guys would be so committed all these years later when Savy completely ran away and ignored their messages for *years* was so unrealistic to me.

All of things that happened off page during these 4 years would have been more interesting to read about than the aftermath

I also really hate when major plot points center around a character choosing to not hear someone out, read their messages, etc. I cannot fathom how someone could get daily texts for years and just choose to not read them, but yet not just block them. Girl, didn’t you ever get curious? And then it happened again with a letter. JUST READ IT, PLEASE!

I will say, though, I still like these characters and the writing is compulsively readable (I flew through this duet, admittedly much less enthusiastically for the second book). I think I would have liked this more had my expectations not been so high after book one

All in all, I’m glad I read this to finish up the duet and see where the characters ended up, but I am sad it didn’t live up to my sheer enjoyment of the first book
