Popular Hits of the Showa Era by Ryū Murakami

4.0

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Book Summary
A group of 6 dysfunctional high school rejects start a ritual murder pact. Until. They meet their opposites - a group of 6 females with only one thing on their mind. Revenge. Wild random acts of violence, chaos, and debauchery ensue.

Notes While Reading
Part of their ritualistic evening involves an intense session of rock paper scissors.

It all changes when one of the 6 randomly murder 1 of 6 females.

It turns into almost a group A vs group B book. Will the murderers get away with it, or will their sisters catch them?

But they start attacking back....

I enjoyed the very [a:Haruki Murakami|3354|Haruki Murakami|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1615497402p2/3354.jpg]-esque chapter on music.

In fact, the writing is a masterful combination of Haruki Murakami, Dean Koontz, and Jack Ketchum.

Extremely quotable book.

Very shocking read.
Things happen very suddenly.

The story kind of reminded me of [b:Piercing|14288|Piercing|Ryū Murakami|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348897731l/14288._SX50_.jpg|816636], but 6vs6 instead of 1vs1.

There's also lots of symbolism of the number 6 about halfway through the book.

The book does ramble on a bit more than the perfect books [b:69|450667|69|Ryū Murakami|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1174878214l/450667._SY75_.jpg|1716005] and Piercing, but it is still an excellent read.

There's a bit of a shot at Vancouver in the book. I found it pretty funny.

Loved the story about the guy's lying lover. Very interesting anecdotes about eating fish, singing, and airplanes.

It's so over the top, I love it. Like, a rocket launcher!? Come on, this is so great!
The third act is so intense!
The end fight is so violent and it all happens so fast!

Incredibly well written book. I love Ryu!

The ending was... Explosive. Very explosive. Let's just say, I feel like I understand how to make a dirty bomb now.

Who will get the last laugh?

It was an outstanding "versus" book.
