The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story by Nikole Hannah-Jones

5.0

In exposing our nation’s troubled roots, the 1619 Project challenges us to think about a country whose exceptionalism we treat as the unquestioned truth. It asks us to consider who sets and shapes our shared national memory and what and who gets left out.

This is a beautifully heartbreaking collection of essays, poetry and historical blurbs that trace the Black American experience from 1619 to present day. And it isn't pretty. This isn't replacing our history, more so looking at it through a different, non white washed, hero worshiping lens. Every American should read this as African American history is American history. It should be required reading in schools. It should not be as controversial as people are making it, I'll never understand..

I listened to the audio book, which has a full cast and is wonderful. I highly recommend it.
