Knocked me off my feet. On one level, it’s a fascinating story about the Civil War— historically inaccurate in many ways and with many racist depictions of Black people and romanticizations of the pre-War south. However, it does give a really interesting look into perhaps the less often imagined point of view and goes to show that it’s not always so obvious when you are on the wrong side of history. On another level, it’s a tragedy about peeling back the layers and layers and layers of life’s illusions to finally, finally catch a glimpse of the truth, only to have gotten there a few weeks too late.
