Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt
3.5
Oh boy do I really dislike Maximus. I found him to be childish and cruel to Artemis, never truly thinking of her as a person and instead raising her up to a status of a caged goddess for his own ego to be satisfied. He needed to have a heartfelt grovel at the end, which we did not get at all. Artemis, on the other hand, was wonderful. Cool, collected, and infinitely patient. I honestly wanted much better for her.
The other thing I disliked about this book was I found it lacked the realism (or at least semi-realism) of the other books. It was like a marriage of fairytale and romance book, which can be completely fine, but isn't what draws readers into the Maiden Lane series. Early morning barefoot strolls from a lady's companion desperate to keep her job? The constant Diana references? I just didn't find any of this so plausible nor romantic.
