The Cabinet by Un-su Kim

3.75

What a weird book! It started out (and sold itself as) whimsical. It was melancholic, sure, and nihilistic, but there was something about the everyday magic and meeting people where they're at. Then it takes a hard left into corporate espionage and then a graphic torture scene. For a torture scene, it was effective but not overly gratuitous, though I did need to take a break afterwards. It radically shifted the status quo, but it felt like the vase you'd just been looking at was shattered into a million pieces for no real reason. It took this book from a solid 4.5 to a 3.75.
