The narration style immediately drew me into These Silent Woods; it was as though Cooper and I were sat at a bonfire, and he was retelling his life story with firelight falling over his face. While this style was super compelling at first, the chapter "cliffhangers" and somewhat repetitive phrases were often lackluster. Ultimately, the reality of the past Cooper alludes to for 75% of the book did not live up to the suspense. The choices made in the last 25%, however, were very gripping. At times I had to cover the bottom of the page so I wouldn't read ahead.

Finch was the best part of this book. Finch as a character is a remarkable example of a realistic child, one who is curious and smart but also has a wild imagination and the occasional rash reaction. Cooper is a good man and good father - though he may disagree on both fronts - but a bit more emotional depth would have served him well in my opinion. The side characters were great. Quality humans. Wonderful, loud woods.
