Grass by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim

challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad medium-paced
This account of a young Korean woman’s experience in forced sexual slavery during WWII in China is movingly rendered and recounted here by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim. The art is beautiful and deeply expressive of the pain and resilience of Lee Ok-Sun’s story. I liked Gendry-Kim’s presence in the story as listener, recorder, and audience, as her reactions and questions definitely guided me. I don’t feel quite right rating this one, as its value and scope in amplifying this particular (and often ignored) experience lies beyond normal critique.
