3/5
Too Late is up to now my least favorite book of Colleen Hoover. However, it still deserves a 3/5. The concept was good, but I found the characters of Sloan and Luck superficial, without personality and incoherent.
First, maybe I started this book expecting it to be exceptional because it’s from a popular author. A story described as a Dark Romance in witch a forbidden love grows for sure got my attention. But it lost it fast. Indeed, I had a hard time finishing this reading with his two epilogue and his prologue out at the end. The book was really long, predictable and without deep meaning.
Next, let’s talk about Sloan. At first, she was described as a badass woman that survives in the shitty world she lives in. It ain’t really what she is. Sloan is a whiny baby that accepts her fatality without fighting. It’s boring to only see her cry and beg. If the author was trying to create a strong female character, she really failed. Another question, where are the social service in this country? With such an irresponsible mother, the kids should have been taken away from her.
Furthermore, I would have prefer a slow burn between Solan and Luck. Their instant love destroy all the beauty of their love story. “Love story” is already a big word considering that Luck is only a lifebelt for Sloan and that Luck is obsessed with Sloan almost in the same way than Asa. If it ain’t obsession, then it’s pity. And their first sex scene was awful. Awful! We had more description about Asa getting a blow job than Sloan and Luck having their first sexual relation.
Finally, I can understand that Sloan has empathy for Asa, but there is way too much emphasis on that. It’s as if she likes being abused and “raped”. I wouldn’t enjoy living in that house and she almost does. Considering what she dealt with, it would only be logical for Sloan to hate Asa.
In conclusion, I do not regret reading Too Late, but I do not recommend it. Sloan and Luck are weak and stupid and their relation isn’t well developed. However, I loved Asa, because his actions are considered and logical with his story line.
