Gettysburg: The Last Invasion by Allen C. Guelzo

5.0

I loved this book. It was long and complex and I'll be the first to admit that I usually don't go for books focusing on generals or battlefield tactics. Guelzo's writing was engaging and even though I know a lot about the battle I found myself sneaking out the books whenever I could to read a few extra pages.

I went to college in Gettysburg and spent lots of time running on the battlefield while I was there. This is the first book that made me really consider the landscape as it was in 1863. The book was well researched and I appreciated that he tied in the civilian experience, although I expected a bit more on that front. Guelzo clearly feels that Lee lost the battle more than Meade won it, which is an interesting take and was well-reasoned.

This is the one book I've borrowed from the library this year that I want to go out & buy to add to my library.
